Saturday, August 13th, 2011

This is a typical element of Thai temple archcitecture that is called chofa. The two long golden spires that point into the sky and kind of resemble a bird. They can come in different shapes and colors and materials, so not all of them are covered with golden mosaic.

Buddha Statues at Wat Dhammamongkol

Wednesday, July 20th, 2011

If you visit Wat Dhammamongkol in Bangkok, you can see this collection of Buddha statues. They are behind glass, that’s why there is a slight reflection in the image.

Buddha Statues in Wat Dhammamongkol

It’s nice because you can see Buddha images from different periods of Thai history. For example, in the upper right quarter of the picture you see a standing Buddha image with one hand raised – when you look at the elegant form and a slender, oval face.

This temple is a bit off the beaten path, and definitely not a tourist attraction – but if you have already seen the major temples of Bangkok, this one is a nice addition for a Bangkok temple tour.

Wat Prayoot Memorial Mountain

Friday, July 8th, 2011

If you have never been to Wat Prayoot – it’s an interesting temple in Bangkok. There’s a memorial mountain where many little shrines and chedis are installed to commemorate the dead.

There is also a turtle pond, and you can buy bananas and papayas to feed the turtles. It’s actually quite fun, and for Thai and Chinese people, it’s a way of making merit. As you can imagine, the turtle is associated with a long life, so it might just help you to enjoy the beauty of this world a little longer :-)
