Wat Phra Kaew

Wat Phra Kaew is the most important temple of Bangkok – it’s also known as the Temple Of The Emerald Buddha. It’s official name is Wat Phra Sri Rattana Satsadaram, but almost nobody ever uses that.

Wat Phra Kaew is located within the walls of the Grand Palace. The Wat Phra Kaew temple houses the Emerald Buddha – a Buddha statue that is carved from a single green jade stone. The official name of the Emerald Buddha statue is Phra Phuttha Maha Mani Rattana Patimakon. It can be found in the ubosoth.

If you visit the Wat Phra Kaew temple, be sure to pay attention to the murals – some of the paintings on the walls are excellent examples of the achievements of religious art in Thailand.

The temple is build in the Rattanakosin style (the historic period in Thailand prior the the current period).
