Wat Trai Mit
Wat Trai Mit is one of the most popular tourist destinations for Bangkok visitors because of the Golden Buddha statue. It is 3 meters high and made out of 5500 kg pure, solid gold – it’s the biggest Buddha statue made out of gold in the whole world, and it is estimated that is more than 700 years old, created during the Sukothai period.

The Story of The Golden Buddha
There is a whole story behind the Golden Buddha statue – back in the times when the ancient kingdom of Siam (now Thailand) was at war with Burma, the Siamese covered it with an outer layer, so that it looked like a normal buddha statue. This way, it would not attract attention from the Burmese enemies. However, only very few people knew how the Golden Buddha has been hidden, and it is not clear what happened to those who knew about the secret.
Thus, it was only years later by accident in 1955 that someone discovered that this plain buddha statue actually had a massive Golden Buddha hidden inside. This is how it happened: they were doing construction works and wanted to move the buddha statue. Then, a piece of it broke off, revealing that underneath the normal plaster, there was pure gold inside.
Opening hours: 9 AM – 5 PM
The temple is also known as Wat Tri Mit Wit Thayaram.
